Flying Humvee a step closer to reality, still seems like a really bad idea

It looks like AAI Corp has, indeed, landed the contract for feasibility studies of the Transformer flying Humvee project, which as far as we can tell takes a lightly armored (if armored at all) four man vehicle and puts it in the air, practically begging to be hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. And if that doesn't sound sketchy enough, keep in mind that among the design considerations are gas tanks in the craft's wings which, as Spencer Ackerman at Wired points out, would make really obvious targets. The testing should last about a year, and cost DARPA a cool $3 million. If all goes well, AAI could have a partial prototype in 2013.

Mulve, the free and non-P2P music download app, shut down by RIAA

TorrentFreak is reporting that Mulve, just one week after we first wrote about it, has been shut down by the RIAA. It seems that, while the RIAA was unable to touch the majority of the service, Mulve had a portion of its site hosted with USA-based Hostgator. All it took was one DMCA cease-and-desist letter, and Mulve is now offline.

As to why Mulve (which is a concatenation of 'Music Love,' according to its developers) had its website hosted in the USA, who knows. Perhaps they hadn't figured on receiving quite so much attention last week -- or maybe they're just new to the RIAA rigmarole. Mulve told TorrentFreak that the downtime is only temporary, but no ETA was given for its return.

There's a silver lining, though: pirateapp, an open source variant of Mulve that downloads music from the same place at the same high speeds, still works.

Comics Spotlight on Nomad: Girl Without a World

Happy Comics Release Day!
The last few weeks I’ve been writing about comics with a harder edge and this week, I wanted a change, something that kids could also read. When my monthly shipment from my local comics place arrived last weekend with Marvel’s Nomad: Girl Without a World by Sean McKeever, artist David Baldeon (with [...]

Galaxy Tab Bluetooth Stylus emerges, up for 49.99 pre-order

It's been a month since we caught our first glimpse of the Galaxy Tab's Bluetooth Stylus and today, although still seemingly unofficial, it's appeared in its first pre-order listing. Priced at £49.99 ($79) by UK online specialist Play, this capacitive stylus will facilitate handwriting recognition for those of us not served well enough by the Tab's generally excellent soft keyboard. It's also capable of hooking up to two Bluetooth devices at a time and has the extra intelligence thrown in to receive and reject phone calls -- whether on the Tab or on your phone. It's an intriguing piece of kit, maybe Samsung should go ahead and make it official now, eh?

A grand tour of nanotechnology at Nokia Research Center, Cambridge

We've all seen what a bumpy ride Nokia's had over the last few months -- disappointing profits, the departure of a couple of old friends, and the slight delay of the forthcoming N8. Despite all that, Espoo seems to have at least one stronghold that remained unshaken throughout the storm: its research center in Cambridge, UK. Yep, we're talking about the magical place where Nokia and University of Cambridge co-develop the core technologies for the futuristic Morph concept. Actually, "futuristic" might be too strong a word here, as we were fortunate enough to see some of Nokia's latest research at the heart of Morph -- namely flexible circuitry and nanowire sensing -- demonstrated live yesterday. Curious as to how well the demos went? Then read on -- you know you want to.

Samsung Galaxy Tab as Home Watcher remote control (video)

Seems like only yesterday that we were begging a big named consumer electronics company to get into home automation. Now Samsung, the world's biggest consumer electronics company, complies with a demonstration of the connected home of the future using its own Galaxy Tab. The demo depicts live widget-based control over your home's HVAC, TV (including remote viewing), stove, oven, dryer, vacuum robot, and refrigerator with integrated grocery manager that suggests recipes based upon the food you have. Unfortunately, instead of offering details on when (or how) Samsung's vision might become reality, the demo's main intent seems to be showing off Samsung's latest product line from IFA earlier this month. It's still worth a trip beyond the break for a peek though.
