Microsoft offers stability update for Internet Explorer 9 Beta

internet explorer 9 beta
Microsoft has offered up the first Internet Explorer 9 patch via Windows Update. KB2448827 is all about improving reliability and stability, and you should be able to find it on your Update screen by clicking through to view optional updates (or by navigating to Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Select updates to install in Explorer). It's a little odd to see Microsoft do this -- they're typically not big on delivering patches to beta apps the way competitors like Google and Mozilla do. Perhaps there's a paradigm shift underway in Redmond.

If you're looking for some real IE9-related excitement, the recently-leaked Internet Explorer 9 beta 2 (which may, in fact, be an RC build) might be more up your alley. It's floating around the usual places you find 'community releases' of Microsoft apps.

BlackBerry Curve 8980 shows up in FCC, offers some glam shots

Despite the more recent releases of the Curve 8500 series and the Curve 3G, RIM has never really offered up a true successor to the venerable Curve 8900 -- a device some would argue remains the prettiest that Waterloo has ever manufactured. Indeed, with the QVGA display and meager cam on the 3G, there's a pretty magnificent gap between it and the business-class Bold 9700 / 9780... so we're pretty excited to see a new model called the Curve 8980 get FCC approval. Oh, and what's more, the filing's now got access to a user's manual and external shots where you can definitely picture this as being a proper optical pad-equipped follow-on to the 8900 of old, complete with a 3.2 megapixel cam with flash and -- if we had to guess -- a high-res display adopted either from the 9780 or the 8900. No word on a release, but here's the kicker: as far as we can tell from the filing, it's EDGE-only just like the device it replaces, which is pretty inexcusable for a device that'd presumably be released in 2011. Add 3G, though, and they've got a desperately-needed new model to slot in underneath the Bold.

Why Would Anyone Root the Nook Color to Play Angry Birds? [Nook Color]

I love Angry Birds as much as the next person, but I suspect there's a certain George "because it's there" Mallory-ism to the Xda-Developers community, which has published its Color root-tute for playing Angry Birds here. [XDA via Engadget] More »

Microsoft announces 2.5 million Kinects sold in first 25 days

Points for style, Microsoft, crossing the 2.5 million Kinect sensors sold mark a convenient 25 days into your global sales of that ever-so-hackable / sometimes-cool-for-gaming item. This number factors in Black Friday sales from this past weekend, and has us really curious as to how well Sony has been doing of late -- Sony's been mum on Move numbers since it announced 1 million units shipped about a month ago. Microsoft says it's on pace to sell 5 million Kinect units through this holiday, which leads us to wonder: what sort of 3D video extravaganza could we pull off with 5 million Kinects in tandem?

Microsoft in talks to start new TV service using the 360?

Media Center Recorded TV
Microsoft's been strangely quiet during the recent smart TV explosion even though it has arguably the most mature set of products in Windows Media Center and Mediaroom, and now we know why: Reuters says MS has been meeting with media companies in an effort to create an entirely new TV service possibly delivered through the Xbox 360. Apparently there are multiple options on the table, ranging from a full-on "virtual cable operator" with monthly fees to using the 360 as an extension of existing cableco online TV initiatives to simply delivering certain channels like ESPN and HBO a la carte, and Reuters' sources say the plan might take another 12 months to develop. That sounds like a bit too long, if you ask us: Apple and Google are waging a major living room assault, and we can't imagine Microsoft is willing to miss another technology cycle -- especially not one where it holds the significant advantage of the 360's installed base and proven history as an IPTV device on multiple operators worldwide, including Uverse. We'll see what happens -- it sounds like the battle might finally be joined.

Manufacture Royale debuts $1.2 million Opera accordion watch, Sir Steampunk scoffs

Well, pardon us. We balked at the $208 price tag affixed to Tokyoflash's RPM LED wristwatch, but the value proposition there now looks an awful lot brighter when compared to this. Manufacture Royale's looking to catch at least one or two elitists off guard with its new Opera Time-Piece, a $1.2 million device that's composed of 319 parts in the wilds of Switzerland. Purportedly, it was designed by Fabrique du Temps, and the minute repeater plays the hours in the key of A as the minutes chime in C sharp. It's also encased in 18k gold, sapphire crystal and a healthy dose of self-worth. Word on the street has it that only a dozen of these will be made available for sale, with the accordion casing being the standout feature in our eyes. In a manner of speaking, of course.

Google's beautiful HTML5 guide to the Web

20 Things I Learned About Browsers And The Web is a beautiful and educational example of what we can expect from the HTML5 Web. It was developed by the Google Chrome team to showcase both the power of its browser, and of HTML5 itself.

20 Things is fully illustrated, too, and on each page a cheesy subtitle or piece of poetry awaits. Put simply, it's a delight. If you're a hardened Web expert, spend a few minutes leafing through it to enjoy the HTML5esque features -- the offline storage, the page-turning, flipping the light switch in the bottom-right corner -- and then send the link to a friend or family member. Check the Google announcement if you want more details.

It's a damn sight better than Google's last attempt at an HTML5 showpiece, that's for sure. At least this one actually works with Firefox and Internet Explorer 9! It's a little bit slow with Opera, but there should be a hardware-accelerated beta version of Opera 11 any day now...

Since the 6th generation iPod nano was introduced by Apple on September 1st, it seems to be getting more attention as a wrist watch instead of a music player. We’ve covered several watch band cases for the nano in the last few months, and now we have another one to tell you about. It’s the [...]

Hulu Plus now available to all, price dropped to $7.99 a month

There good news today for those of you who have been wishing you could sign up for Hulu Plus: the service has officially launched. Better yet, they've knocked the price down from $9.99 to $7.99 -- and preview users will get a credit back for the difference. The price drop has a lot to do with the recent testing of Netflix's streaming-only plan (which is also $7.99 per month).

Hulu's launch announcement also includes plenty of ways to enjoy a little Plus for free:
  • Buyers of new Sony Bravia TVs or Blu-ray players can get 11 free weeks
  • New Roku device purchasers get one month free
  • Preview users will get one week free as a thank-you
  • Current Hulu customers get a two-week free trial
The announcement also mentions a slew of new devices which will be getting access to Hulu, from Vizio Blu-Ray players to Western Digital's Live TV Plus media player. There's also mention of enhancements to existing Hulu apps for iOS devices and the PS3 which are coming soon -- though no specific details were given.

Adobe releases single-file cumulative patch for Acrobat 9

Yes, Acrobat and Flash are two of the most-exploited pieces of software out there today, but Adobe has done a much better job of responding to security concerns in 2010. Patches are more frequent, and major improvements have been rolled out -- like the sandboxing which was added in Acrobat and Reader X.

Still, there are always people who can't -- for one reason or another -- install an update like Reader X. Adobe recognizes that, and they've decided to make it easy for administrators to deliver all the necessary patches for Acrobat 9 in one fell swoop. The single file patch currently includes 12 updates for version 9, and Adobe's Joel Geraci states that the company will add any future updates to the file. The company plans on offering the same type of patch file for Reader X.

NoMute reclaims iPad orientation lock in iOS 4.2, but only if you jailbreak

If you've yet to upgrade your iPad to iOS 4.2.1, and you're head-over-heels with your orientation lock, you've got two options: upgrade and lose that functionality altogether, or upgrade / jailbreak and get it back. Naturally, we'd recommend the latter. In what can only be described as "so typically Apple," the software engineers at Cupertino figured that they'd convert the perfectly acceptable orientation lock switch into a mute switch. We lamented this fact in our review of the update, but rather than Apple creating (non-fiddly) alternatives within its software, we're left to look for a solution in the jailbreaker's app store. NoMute has just emerged under the BigBoss repository in Cydia, promising to reclaim the switch you've already become accustomed to using. It's available now for absolutely nothing, but users are encouraged to cast a wicked glare in Steve's direction as the download ensues.
